Adventure Destination: Harnas Wildlife Foundation, Namibia

Following in the footsteps of Brangelina, you too can get wild in the same African locales as Angelina Jolie. The well-heeled star is listed as a patron of the Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia, a country so overrun with exotic wildlife that Cheetahs are oftens shot as nuisances.  That climate is what led to the transition of the “once normal cattlefarm to a charitable organisation dedicated to save endangered wild animals in Namibia.”

The farm offers opportunities to volunteer and plenty of other ways to experience African wildlife up close in a sustainable and eco-friendly way.

Vital Info:

HARNAS WILDLIFE FOUNDATION: Gobabis, Namibia;  011-264-61-235511. The wildlife center hosts day visitors for about $8.50 a day; overnight visitors in cottages for about $194 a night or at camp sites for $22 a night; and monthlong volunteers for $1,640, including accommodations and meals.
GETTING THERE:
Gobabis is 180 miles east of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. Air Namibia offers service to Windhoek from London (Gatwick); Frankfurt, Germany; and Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.

One should really take the time out to visit Harnas. It may be a little out of the way (NE of Windhoek), but it is an amazing opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the endangered animals they have rescued and are rehabilitating. What the van der Merwe’s are doing there is so unselfish, there is so much care for each and every animal from meerkat, wild pigs to jackals and even the endangered african wild dog. I was lucky enough to stay for a year and a half on a neighbouring farm and visited or rather “kyered” (pronounced - kayered, Afrikaans slang for: informal visit) on several occassions.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family for the sudden loss of their eldest son and brother - Nico in Dec06. You are one courageous, close-knit family. I will miss visiting there. With love Carmen
