Superman and the North Face Endurance 50
Warning: Reading any further could be hazardous to your self-esteem. That’s because Dean Karnazes is in better shape than you. Hands down, no questions, guaranteed. He’s the man behind The North Face Endurance 50, an insane mission to run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days.
Today he’s in Casper, Wyoming, on Day 9 of the mission. Dude already caught a cold after the seventh race in Lincoln, Nebraska, but he’s still going.
If you’ve never heard of Dean, you probably haven’t been paying attention. He’s been a guest on just about …

The first snow of the year officially hit the Rockies to begin this week. No skiing just yet, but the folks around Steamboat Springs, Vail and Beaver Creek are getting psyched up for another banner year. Here in the Southwest, we’re just hoping to see our share after last year gave us the driest winter on record. More dosification:

Good to finally be out of the shadow of yesterday’s anniversary. Pretty strange vibe in the air all day, I noticed. Went to my first day of spanish class yesterday in an attempt to brush up for the coming winter adventure to South America, which is still in the planning phases and subject to change. We plan to land somewhere between Panama and Patagonia, that’s about all I know. Enough blathering, time to hit you with the dose:

The Jeep® Travel Bug Geocaching Challenge
By now you’re thinking, what the heck is a travel bug, and what the heck is geocaching? Let’s take the second part first on that one. Geocaching is an emerging sport that got started about six years ago and is really the modern day treasure hunt as sport. A treasure chest or ‘cache’ (usually there’s nothing valuable inside, remember this is for the love of sport, not greed, folks) is hidden somewhere in the world, and the hider than takes a location reading using a GPS tool. Those coordinates are then posted on a website for other geocachers to use to locate the cache. If this isn’t quite clear, check out the official geocaching faq.
Now, on to the first part.

Afternoon Adventure: Downhill Sprint
I present the following at the risk of revealing what a truly silly person I am. I think delaying our Utah trip and being strapped to this laptop for an extra week is soaking in to my synapses a bit. After failing to round up a hiking partner on short notice yesterday, I finally just packed the dog in the car and headed for the hills for a late afternoon jaunt. We made our way up into the Sangre de Cristos, stopping at a Forest Service trailhead that follows a creek up into New Mexico’s highest mountain range. Due to our late start, time was not on our side, and we would be losing sunlight fairly soon, so we were going to have to cram as much adventure and exploration as possible into about two hours. I needed to release a little frustration and feel a bit of adrenaline to scratch my itchy feet until next week’s trip.

The sun is back out today in Northern New Mexico - still got the itchy feet, though, the Canyonlands are calling. The wife has never been to Utah - she’s in for a treat. Look for dispatches from Moab this week, if she can get out of work and our good friend Camper van Beethoven (our 1977 Dodge Santana Conversion Van) doesn’t run into any problems. More on that later, now on to the Sunday edition of the dose:

Adventure Racing Season Heats Up…
September is a big month for the sport of Adventure Racing. As temperatures cool off heading into autumn, conditions become ideal to take up the quest for complete and total physical exhaustion. This weekend, races are scheduled to take place in Iowa, South Carolina, Texas and Georgia. Personally, I’m going to be keeping my eyes on the LungBuster, a twelve-hour race at Wolf Creek Ski Area in Colorado on September 16. The race is run entirely above 9,000 feet, including some great stretches of the Continental Divide Trail.
Another race that looks to push the envelope this month is …
