When I was a little girl, I traveled with my parents or grandparents. I couldn’t do much to choose the places we visited. But when I started to plan my vacation with schoolmates and later on my own, my inspiration came from various sources. The most important of them? The books I read!

And in those books, I also learned about famous adventure travelers . Sure, at the time they explored the Earth, almost nothing was discovered or charted, so they really did have adventures.

Today, it’s harder to embark on a real adventure. Or isn’t it? While the Earth doesn’t have too many undiscovered places, you can easily plan an adventure off the beaten path. If you like to hike, search for hiking trails ; first, close to where you live and then explore other cities and countries. Cheap flights also make traveling between various countries an affordable and easy endeavor. However, in some cases, buses and trains are the best choice although you’ll spend more time on the road.

Always make sure you are fit enough for what you plan to do. It is challenging and an ego booster to do a 16 hours trail especially when you haven’t done this in a while, but it can be just as bad to have an accident.

Particularly if you travel abroad, buy travel health insurance and ask whether the sport you want to try is included. For example, many companies don’t cover you in case a volcano erupts and you are caught on the mountain. Or they won’t protect you if you try bungee jumping.

I remember once when I went on a hot air balloon ride; I had to sign a paper that I am fully responsible for what I do, as no insurance covered me. And since I lived to tell the story, everything was ok and I loved it.

The Hawaiian Islands are very popular among American tourists. They are easily accessible and offer a variety of things to do. Whether you want to visit one of the islands for a romantic escape or you are looking for adventure, you won’t be disappointed.

While you are here, don’t be afraid to try some of the unique adventures in Hawaii . Plan a two-day hike through Kaupo Gap on Maui. You can spend the night in a campsite or in a cabin. Or head to the wilder island of Lana’i, famous for its outdoor activities. You can mountain bike from the summit to the sea or you can explore the island of foot. Another ideal island for hiking is Moloka’i. Hiking must be done with a local guide but it’s definitely worth it. Feeling more adventurous? Then go cage diving with sharks on Oahu.

If you love the snow, you can find it here: on Big Island. So plan a day out snowboarding or skiing on Mauna Kea volcano. The best time for such a vacation is between January and March, but snowfalls occur in July, as well.

But regardless of what you plan to do here, don’t forget to try the traditional Hawaiian food .

So, what are you waiting for? Look for a cheap flight to Hawaii and start your adventure!

The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago belonging to Ecuador. They are located about 1000 km west of the South American continent. The archipelago comprises 13 main islands and 6 smaller islands. It is renowned for the animals of the Galapagos Islands , such as the giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins, marine iguanas, as well as various types of birds.

The archipelago has a different climate than mainland Ecuador. There are two seasons: hot and rainy from December to June and cooler weather from June to November. The peak travel season for those who want to see the wildlife is between December and May. Summer months – June to August – are also popular as the animals are very active.

Visiting Galapagos is not cheap. First you need to fly into Ecuador and then choose a domestic flight into the islands. They depart from Guayaquil or Quito. There are two flights a day from Quito but it’s cheaper to fly from Guayaqui.

If you don’t want to worry about planning the vacation on your own, you can book one of the adventure trips to the Galapagos Islands . They depart from Quito and combine nature tours with history. Plus you can book such a trip online and only worry about how to get to Quito since once you are there everything is taken care of. Price wise, adventure trips range between US$1735 per person (5 days) and $4990 per person (24 days).

Of course, you need to add the cost of airfare to Quito. A round trip flight from New York in mid-August starts at US$772 per person, while if you leave from London you’ll rack up from US$1709 per person for a round trip.

For adventure junkies, staying fit on a trip is a no brainer. When the trip is all about activity – hiking, climbing, mountain biking – it’s easy to burn off any calories you’ve taken on, say, eating your way through Barcelona. But for the rest of us more casual adventurers, it can be a little more difficult to stay in shape, especially during prolonged or frequent travels. If you’re staying in a place with a gym, you have more options, but if not, well it’s not exactly possible to travel around with your own set of dumbbells.

But that doesn’t mean that those on a longer trip have to resign themselves to giving up on fitness for the duration of the trip. Sure, you’ll maintain a moderate fitness level just by the activities you participate in on your trip – hiking, long walks, and running while traveling will help keep you toned, but there are ways to work a more serious fitness regime into your travels, and they don’t require toting around a whole lot of extra gear.

For one, you’d be surprised how much effort your can expend working out with your own body weight. A circuit routine that involves weight training exercises like squats, lunges, planks and pushups, combined with vigorous cardio like jumping rope, can burn even more calories than running, while helping you tone up flabby areas and burn fat. There are countless resources on the web, including routines you can download and print out, cardio podcasts, and workout DVDs that specialize in moves that don’t require any more equipment than a good pair of shoes.

With the proper workout routine you can stay fit for adventure, even on a long trip. To make sure you’re getting the level of intensity you need in your workout, check out the best heart rate monitors, which will calibrate your heart rate and the number of calories you’re burning with your workout.

Bali is famous for its varied landscape, with hills, mountains, rivers and beaches…which makes it ideal for an adventure vacation. With superb diving and snorkeling spots, as well as spiritual culture, the Island of the Gods is drawing tourists from all over the world.

If you fancy an adventure vacation here, make sure to look up travel insurance for Bali and buy it when you make the other travel arrangements. Just make sure the policy covers whatever unusual things to do in Bali you have in mind.

The range of adventure vacations in Bali is … large, to say the least. From the heart-pumping to the rather stupid ones [blame the tour adventure companies for this] , you’ve got a lot to try. Still, we recommend sticking to the real neat adventures! Such as…walking on the bottom of the ocean. It’s a unique form of diving and definitely one that makes your heart beat faster.

If you are into climbing then Gunung Agung will be an interesting challenge for you. Remember you need to be fit and carry a lot of water with you. Don’t try this one during the wet season though.

I’ve got my heart set on Bungy Jumping for several years but never managed to actually do it … I still have hope and some locations in mind, though. In Bali, there’s quite an “exotic” place to do it: in the grounds of the Double Six nightclub.

White water rafting, submarine dives and helicopter rides can also compete for the title of wild adventures while in Bali.

So, have you looked for flights to Bali yet?

Vail is an American ski resort, located in the Rocky Mountains, close to Denver, Colorado. It is not exactly a cheap ski resort, therefore the cool ski and snowboard accessories are a must. Plus, those fancy polarized photo chromatic ski goggles are actually useful as the lenses change based on the level of lighting so you will always have the best visibility for the conditions.

The ski season in Vail is long but the earlier you go the better. February is an excellent choice. The weather is sunny and you can get some excellent deals. Also, the nightlife is in full swing. If you haven’t made any plans for Valentine’s Day yet, you can look for last minute deals and grab one.

Although the Vail / Eagle Airport is located just 25 minutes by car from Vail, it is better to book one of the flights to Denver . From there, you can rent a car and travel the rest of the distance to Vail.

Vail is an excellent choice for a family vacation, as well. There are ski bikes, kids snowmobile track and a slippery slope of rip-roaring tubing lanes, among other attractions for the younger members of the families. The Ski School is excellent, although not exactly very cheap. If the kids don’t want to ski, you can take the Gondola to the top of the mountain. After a day on the slopes, you should try one of the spa treatments.

Traveling in developing countries like India comes with its own unique set of challenges. As anyone who has ever had to negotiate their first squat toilet or endure a nine hour bus ride with a farm animal will tell you, traveling in less developed countries isn’t easy, but it is rewarding as you learn to live life like a local and step out of your comfort zone.

Among some of the many challenges you may face in a developing country are bathroom facilities that you may not find up to par with what you have at home, odd dishes that can’t figure out how to eat, uncomfortable transit situations, awkward shopping experiences, sketchy political encounters and of course, the realization that everything takes about three times as long as you’d expect. It’s no different in India; train travel in India resembles nothing like Amtrak and many of the bathrooms are a far cry from the pristine, modern facilities found in the US. But that’s what you’re traveling for after all, isn’t it? To get away from the familiar and see something completely foreign. India is one of the best places to immerse yourself in another culture and open your ideas to the differences – and similarities – of people around the world.

And luckily, it’s an affordable place to visit as well. Flights to India are quite expensive on their own, but if you’re planning some extended travel, adding India to your itinerary won’t bust your budget. Once on the ground, travel in India is almost shockingly cheap. You may to learn a few new coping skills to travel here, but you can do so while spending very little money for an eye-opening cultural experience.

Colorado ranks very high with three excellent ski destinations: Arapahoe Basin, Snowmass Mountain and Loveland.

Loveland – one of the highest ski areas in North America – is one of the first resorts to open. Its unique location ensures natural snow, making it one of the best places to ski on the continent. Snowmass, although not as popular as its sister, Aspen, is a huge resort mostly known for being family-friendly. However, it also offers extensive extreme skiing terrain for those looking for adventure. Arapahoe Basin offers the highest skiable terrain in North America and boasts one of the longest ski seasons on the continent.

In case snow is not exactly your thing, you can always plan a vacation in the Caribbean, soaking up the sun. And while your friends are freezing their behinds at home, you are catching a lovely tan.

Adventure travel doesn’t always having to mean climbing mountains, rafting over rushing rapids, or throwing yourself off a cliff. Adventure travel is about pushing yourself to your limits in any way – physically, mentally or spiritually. If you’re in the mood for a lighter type of adventure, check out the Santiago de Compostela trail in Spain. Hiking the Camino has long been a favorite pilgrimage route for Spaniards, and now many tourists are getting in on the action.

The hiking route, officially called the Camino de Santiago (or Way of Saint James), but often called the Santiago de Compostela is a medieval pilgrimage route that ends at that town’s cathedral, which is said to be the burial place of Saint James the Great,. Saint James was one of the 12 apostles and supposedly, after he was killed, his remains were brought back to Galicia and a church at Santiago de Compostela was constructed to hold the holy relics.

During medieval times the walk was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages, and now it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The walk is challenging in parts, and takes several days to complete. But along the way, those who have a credencial – a pilgim’s passport – can often receive one free (or very reduced) night’s lodging and free food. Which means all you’ll need to pay for in order to complete the pilgrimage is your flights to Spain, transport to the starting point, and a good pair of walking shoes.

This makes the route an excellent low-cost way to see the countryside and challenge youself to the physical and mental demands of a long-distance walk in Spain.

Any vacation can be an adventure. Some define adventure linked to an adrenaline rush; it may come from bungee jumping, white water rafting, snorkeling or hiking. And for some – myself included – exploring the culinary delights of a new place is an adventure!

When you look for your next flights on Hawaiian Airlines , how about planning to fly to Maui? Book one of the cheap hotels on Maui and make plans to explore the superb island.

If you don’t like the cold weather in Continental US then planning a vacation in Maui in January or February is the best way to escape the snow and cold temperatures. The island’s natural beauty recommends it as a place to explore the nature. Among hikes on volcanoes and enjoying the sun on the beach, don’t forget to eat like a local on Maui . And by the way, it’s actually cheap to enjoy an interesting and good meal if you know where to find it. Whether you are after Japanese food or good old American hot dog, you can find them all here.

And remember, regardless of what you plan to do once you arrive in Hawaii, always leave room for some romance. You’ll fall in love with the sunsets, sunrises and the landscape…and we are pretty sure that you’ll end up planning your next St. Valentine’s escape on one of the Hawaiian islands.
