Daily Dose: Friday, September 8th

Beginning the dose on a somber note this morning, quintessential adventurer and animal fanatic Steve Irwin will be buried sometime in the next week. In the spirit of learning from the mistakes and misfortunes of others rather than some morbid fascination, I dutifully post this link to YouTube, where several clips of the fatal sting have been posted. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to finish this dose, so I can go settle into the couch with a bottle of vodka and a DVD of Grizzly Man to remind me that the entire world is not our petting zoo.

Top of the World Express

Good or bad news for visitors to Tibet? The world’s highest train line is set to begin service from Lhasa to Shanghai. As if we weren’t aware of it already, adventure travel has officially taken a hit from globalization.

Who needs Bangkok?

When you can catch a flight to Cambodia from Korea? No more 18 hour red-eye flights from the west coast! I still recommend finding a local guide who knows where the land mines are before traipsing around the jungle on your own, however.

Scouring the earth for video

For those of you that are technologically inclined (or obsessed) enough to lug a camcorder along on your travels, you might be interested in what the boys at scourist.com are doing. The bare-bones site publishes short travel videos on a regular basis. Be sure to check out the Namibia safari soundtrack in the “Biltong for Breakfast” series.

Taking adventure to the conference center

OK, so I realize most of you wouldn’t consider sitting in an auditorium listening to people talk about adventure travel, probably doesn’t qualify as an adventure in itself. Nonetheless, there will be some interesting folks on hand at this year’s Adventure Travel World Summit in Seattle Oct. 19 -21. Check out the agenda.

Time to get passports in line

According to USA Today, now is the time to get those passports in advance of winter and spring travel. Travel industry analysts say waiting to long could lead to an even longer delay in receiving that all-important little blue book.

Today’s Destination: Cat Ba Archipelago, Vietnam

Great scenery, great people, great value. May I recommend the sea kayaking?
